Hello to all the 2026-2027 applicants!

I was accepted this previous cycle with a merit scholarship and thought I’d try help out this year’s applicants if I can. If you have any questions about Pitt/application process I’ll do my best to answer (while preserving some anonymity).

My details:

In State/ORM, 1 gap year

52X MCAT/3.9X GPA

~400 paid/~50 volunteer high impact clinical hrs

<50 shadowing hrs

~600 volunteer hrs + volunteer leadership

~1k research hours + 2k from full time gap year, no pubs/posters at time of app

-strong LORs and I’d like to think strong essays as well, although no particularly unique narrative/motivations.

-interview performance felt meh to average but I have no way of knowing

I hope you get an early interview then. My girlfriend is literally a resident at UPMC, and I still got a late interview, well after their class was full. As you can tell, there’s just been no WL movement, they’ve wasted everyone’s time.

Don't apologize at all I really appreciate the transparency! I was rejected last cycle, so i'm reapplying this cycle with a new mcat (Score gets in tomorrow). Hoping for a quick turnaround on the secondary and hopefully an interview. Not sure if you're applying again this cycle, but if so, good luck and we got this!

What questions did you ask adcoms during interview that you think were helpful for your knowledge but also made you seem good and like you did your homework?

Questions I asked to most schools on interview day (not necessarily to sound prepared but just to get a better vibe of the school):

1. What is something about the school that could be a dealbreaker to some/what is the most common complaint about school

2. What impact have students had on the school/curriculum/examples of student feedback being implemented

3. What is the city like, what is there to do, etc.

4. Any curriculum questions, etc. I actually asked one of my interviewers a question that was answered in the pre-interview info session itself but I slightly misunderstood, so if anything I did the opposite of “homework” lol.

Overall I’d say my interviewers were super chill and sweet, I believe they were given a list of questions to pick from and didn’t really deviate/have time to deviate from them that much.

I’ll add on - “What is (insert school) the best in the world at?” Everyone I asked always got excited to answer that one.

Hi, UPitt requires "one half year" of Biochemistry but I went to a quarter system school and they only made us do one quarter...does anyone know if this will be fine? i probably should have checked before :(

Where do we pay the secondary application fee?

it takes a while for it to load (1 hour for me). didn't get an email, so you gotta keep checking the portal.

Did you figure this out? I am legitimately so confused.

EDIT: In case anyone else has a panic attack like me, it ends up loading into the portal after you hit submit. It didn't show up for me until after about 10 minutes.

What does course lab indicator mean on the secondary? The section where you have to add your prereqs

it's just to indicate if the course included a lab or not. on my transcript, gen chem and gen chem lab are listed as two separate classes with two separate grades. so i'd only check the lab box for the lab, not the course. my physics, on the other hand, included the lab in with the course and shared a grade, so i'd click the lab for this one.

Do you think upper level study abroad P/F bio credit is okay. Annoying they don’t take anatomy and physiology for credit

I would stick to observation

i did, i interpreted as an experience where i learned to demonstrate respect/empathy to someone different from me. after submitting i realized the prompt says "observed" but i feel like the first and last sentences are about how i have demonstrated these qualities and will carry them forward. i don't see how just saying you observed someone else do something respectful is impactful, but i might be totally wrong!

What are yall doing for the optional essay? I’m leaning towards a Why Pitt, but would love opinions given the first question focused on your fit for the school.

Yes, I used the optional prompt to discuss one of my most impactful undergrad experiences which I didn’t really write about anywhere else in the secondaries, and how Pitt/pittsburgh are a good fit for me within that context

Honestly, I am really struggling with the first question. Does anyone have any advice please?

Hobby that was very conducive to community service/volunteering, it was fully non clinical and I started out doing it for fun before I was ever premed. Ended up leading my school’s club for it by my junior year

if you’re referring to the teamwork essay (not sure what the prompts are exactly this year) I answered it kinda like a ”

weakness that is actually a strength” question. Talked about how I was a big people pleaser but that led to me being inefficient and unreliable when overcommitting in a clinical setting, then I learned to set boundaries and communicate effectively.

They changed it this year unfortunately

I think it may just be the site verification that the app is complete. Below the blue banner with the submission info and in the white space it says "Thank you for submitting your application. An email with next steps will be sent soon." I was just speculating that maybe it was a good sign since other apps say we won't hear for weeks to months.

Last year, for the Class of 2029, the published stats for Pitt Med are a 3.91 and 516 median.

This year, in the White Coat Class of 2030 post on Pitt Med's official website, the reported stats are a 3.97 and 521 median.

Pretty huge jump in just one year.

Current student here. Just FYI, they revamped the entire admissions committee/process!

How so? More stat-focused i'm guessing? Do they still care abt research.

More stat-focused, I heard that anyone accepted through the post-bac linkage program things needs a 517+ on the MCAT to keep their spot now, I'm assuming they still care about research. Although I didn't have much research and things worked out!

What about in regards to regular MD admissions, does it impose a similar MCAT floor? Based on all the new rhetoric I'm entirely convinced that 516/3.95 is no longer enough for UPitt, even with stellar research productivity
