does anybody know if there is a difference in how your app is treated if you select a preference for regional or main? i really like this school and want to maximize my chance of admission.. if i select regional i assume i could still be considered for main campus the same way, but i doubt its vice versa? if anyone has insight pls lmk

You're overthinking this. Apply with what you truly want and don't try and "hack" the system.

Does anyone have any concerns about GW's deal with UHS? or is this a good thing?

per GW webite: Our interview season typically runs from late August through March, with our first invitations being sent out in mid-August. Files may be read multiple times before a decision is made with regards to extending an interview, and it is quite common that files are put on hold before an interview invitation is extended. We recommend that applicants keep their file updated by using the online Application Portal throughout the application season. Interviews are virtual until further notice.

So don't worry if application is on hold its very early.

Do you mind copying and pasting what the status said exactly? I'm curious since I'm still waiting for a status update!

Your application to The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences is complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee. To date, no final decision has been made and the Admissions Committee has placed your application on hold for re-review at a later date. Files are re-reviewed by the committee periodically and there is no set schedule for decisions. We do interview from August through March. Please feel free to update your file during this time using the GW Admissions Portal. If we require any further documentation or if your status changes, we will contact you immediately. We do sincerely appreciate your interest in our program. Thank you for your patience.

Specifically for GW no I wouldn't see it that way based on how chaotic previous cycles have been. They also say re-review at a later date, no final decision has been made etc. "We haven't sent you an interview at this time" is all you can really make of that here.

I talked to a student he said that its way to early they don't start sending interview invitations until August so if they have looked at your application and havent rejected you thats a good thing but wait until mid August to start getting idea of what it means

Koutroulis, at GW SMHS, notes that for many years, computer programs in many medical schools have sorted applications by basic criteria, mostly academic scores, that send some applications to an effective “no” pile and leave others to be reviewed by the admissions committee.

Admissions leaders stress that the AI tools produce recommendations, not decisions, and will be reviewed by staff to confirm that the admissions criteria have been met and to decide whom to invite for interviews.

“This is not something that will replace human review,” Koutroulis says.

AI for screening and pulling applications from the complete pool for a human read. Not for deciding of course. At GW, getting any eyes on the app is a good thing.

While I understand that AI is the future and schools have a right to review applications in the manner they see fit, it is absolutely unacceptable for them to charge $142 for their secondary if all applications (even the ones that will be an automatic no) don’t get human eyes on them.

Schools should have to disclose this in big bold letters on AMCAS and make this information FREE (not hidden behind an MSAR subscription). If I knew earlier, I wouldn’t have bothered applying.

Nobody knows exactly what the black box is and how exactly they process the applications or if it just sits there unread. That’s how it’s been historically though it’s extremely unfair. Only BU has been completely transparent about their whole process. Have not seen many schools taking that path. But it’s definitely a change for GW because this year they seem to be using AI to screen is the message I wanted to share.

Yeah I just wish programs in general were more transparent with applicants. This article has been out since January, so maybe the oversight was on my end as an applicant but I do think schools should disclose their processes on the page when you submit your primary.

When you're up against 16,000+ applications, schools don't have to do anything for us in the name of transparency, equity, fairness, etc. It's pretty terrible but thats the name of the supply and demand game here unfortunately.

M1 here! Orientation happened this week and I’ve really appreciated how supportive the community is so far. Everyone I’ve spoken with (peers, professors, M2s etc.) are incredibly friendly and seem as though they genuinely want to help you succeed. GW does a great job of settling students in to the workflow and connecting them with resources to further their medical career.

Hope this helps! Don’t forget to give yourself grace throughout this process, and I hope to see you all next year :)
