question about the yale's 1st secondary. last year's prompt explicitly asks for a situation where you interact w/ a background different than you but this year it's just a general "how have your experiences prepared you to care for all individuals regardless of background, education, or viewpoint?". should I still tackle this as an interacting w/ someone different than me essay or can I go more towards diversity? (urm w/ service in my community etc etc)

you can combine both notions, start off with an anecdote and then go broader diversity, for example

Title: International applicant with no research experience interested in Yale Med School

Hi everyone! I’m an international student completing my undergraduate degree in the U.S. on an F-1 visa, and I’m hoping to apply to MD programs. Yale Medical School is a school I’m very interested in, but I also understand that admission is extremely difficult, particularly for international applicants.

Honestly, I’m trying to figure out how realistic this goal is for me and what I would need to do to become a competitive applicant.

For context, I currently have around a 3.7 GPA, am working toward a 515+ MCAT, and have clinical, volunteering, and leadership experiences. However, I currently have 0 research experience, which is one of the areas I’m most concerned about.

For people who have applied to Yale, especially international applicants:

How significant of a disadvantage is having no research experience at this point?

How much research experience would you recommend building before applying?

Does research need to result in publications/posters, or is meaningful involvement in a lab enough?

How important are clinical and non-clinical experiences compared with research?

How much does being an international or F-1 student affect the admissions process?

If you were in my position, what would you prioritize over the next 1–2 years?

Would you consider Yale a realistic reach for someone with my current profile, or an extremely unlikely option?

I’m genuinely looking for realistic feedback, even if the answer is that I have a lot of work to do. I’d rather know that now and use the next couple of years wisely than build my application around unrealistic expectations.

yale is a stat and research whore and it doesnt help that your gpa isn't 3.95+ and you'll ideally need a 520+ to pass Yales medians. Research and productivity is probably the single most important thing for yale, not saying you wont get in without research productivity but you'll need something completely unique and compelling elsewhere to make up for it but you'll 100% need good amount of research experience to get in the first place.

As an international applicant you'll have all the odds against you unfortunately so in the next 1-2 years, focus on research and getting posters abstracts and publications, easiest to do this in clinical research rather than wet labs. Also aim for a mid to high 520s and try to get your gpa to 3.9+

Thank you for the honest advice. I definitely understand that I have a lot of work to do, especially with research and the MCAT.

Given that I currently have a ~3.7 GPA and 0 research experience, would you recommend taking a gap year before applying? I’m wondering if using that year to build substantial research experience and hopefully work toward posters/abstracts/publications would make a meaningful difference, rather than trying to rush everything into my remaining undergraduate years.

Also, would you prioritize getting the research experience first and then focusing on productivity once I’m established in a lab, or would you recommend specifically looking for clinical research opportunities where I could potentially have more opportunities for abstracts/posters/publications?

i just got an II at yale and have only 400 hrs research experience but it’s in cancer immunology and i’m basically running my own project from generating hypothesis to extracting tumors from mice to get data. No pubs! I think they just liked how i take my own initiative for my work and it’s a pretty unique situation. Also im independent which fits their curriculum nicely. Pubs aren’t everything!

Hello! I really admire how you took the initiative to develop and carry out your own research project. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you go about getting the opportunity to take ownership of your own project? Did you approach a PI with your idea, or did it develop from working in the lab?

I’m asking because I’m currently trying to get involved in research, and I’m also interested in learning more about how students can develop an independent research project if they aren’t able to find a traditional lab position. I’d really appreciate hearing about how you got started and any advice you might have!

Wanted to ask if anyone else has gathered more information on this or can offer an answer but I am curious about the prerequisite requirements at Yale especially given their emphasis on in person lab experience. The specific clause is: "Pre-requisite laboratory coursework must be completed in person at an accredited academic institution. Online courses, including those that utilize at-home laboratory kits, will not be accepted. This requirement reflects the Committee on Admissions’ expectation that in-person laboratory experiences are essential for developing a comprehensive understanding of scientific concepts and methods." If you took a course during COVID where the lab component was administered online does that not qualify?

They mentioned during an info session that if a course was completed online due to COVID-related course modality changes between essentially 2020 to spring 2022, then it's fine but you should make a note in the additional info box to clarify.
