Spill the tea on Cornell, good and bad. Is it actually a good place to be?

Part of me feels like, since I’m interested in ortho, it’s a no-brainer because of HSS. But I don’t want to get tunnel vision and base my whole decision on that alone.

What are you deciding between?

If you would be happy at Cornell independent of HSS, that is a strong reason to attend. If HSS is the big driver, that is likely too thin a foundation for such a substantial decision. Multiple institutions offer home programs that are equally elite, equally productive, and equally capable of launching you into ortho. I would prioritize cost of attendance, location, and the recognition that your interests will likely evolve during medical school.

Cornell, UCLA, Pritzker, Northwestern, or Kaiser.

Financials matter a lot to me, and I think the only schools that will cover all costs will be Cornell and Pritzker.

They are free! However, they won't share their match list, which has me super sussed out since I want to do ortho. So they're more of my plan B rn

Are you low income? Cornell will cover all costs for low income students I think, and yeah that + HSS sounds crazy. Both Cornell and Pritzker are T20s which are famous for offering stipends. So you wouldn't pay anything, so IMO Cornell and Pritzker definitely the top tier, whoever offers you a stipend at that level you should prob go.

Northwestern is also a great option, tuition will likely be covered, but I think they are slightly less likely to offer stipends. If Kaiser offers a stipend and no one else does, worth considering I think?

I heard UCLA has been having some pretty significant problems lately with a lot of STEP failures, funding cuts, lawsuits etc. and the school as a whole seems like its losing stability from the outside, especially as the admin is going after them in several ways. Their full COA funding is also used up I think. Seems like by far the worst choice when you have options which are more stable top schools like Pritzker or Cornell that will offer u a stipend.

Have you received finaid from anyone? Cornell and Pritzker are both amazing, depends on how interested you are in health equity, official aid packages, where you wanna live etc.
