on msar it says they automatically send out secondaries? how quickly does that process happen? i haven't been super confident in pre-writing for ohsu since it looks like they change prompts every year. i'm nervous about not having much prepared yet, but i still haven't heard from any other schools so i'm not sure if i'm going to be swamped with secondaries suddenly or if it will just be a slow trickle.

I would just write other schools in the interim and wait for OHSU's to land in your inbox. OHSU is the last school you should rush to submit, there is no penalty for being "late," and they really like solid narratives Secondary will be sent out automatically at which point you are given 28 days, or maybe 1 month im not exactly certain, to submit it. Last year I submitted mine on the deadline and it did not matter at all. they also have so many prompts that by doing other school's you will almost certainly do some pre-writing for whatever their prompts end up being this year.

My impression is that OHSU hasn't sent the secondary to anyone yet. If someone has received it, this would be good to know (along with this year's prompts).

straight up only going to spend my time writing this secondary because i'm going to assume the late release + godawful set of 30 prompts on the MD/PhD side means I'll only be competing against the other 5-10 people psychopathic enough to put themselves through this one

They made us wait this long... just to give us the worst prompts I've ever seen... I feel like a 5th grader wrote these prompts like wow

should I even apply as OOS?

OHSU is not OOS friendly unless you meet the following "preferences":

-Resident of oregon

-Non-resident w/ oregon heritage (attended OR colege, graduated from a OR HS, parents live in OR)

-MD/PHD or MD/MPH

-"Superior" achievements

If you are applying OOS with no ties, I would recommend applying to their MD/MPH if you are qualified, as they're not at all OOS-friendly. The superior achievements is very ambiguous and OHSU doesn't care about 520/4.0s so I'm not sure what they're looking for there.

Are you from OR? I'm OOS but applied based on being from an extremely rural state and growing up in poverty along with being a member of a Special Operations unit in the military. Do you believe this would qualify as "superior achievement in leadership?"

I'm classified as Oregon Hertiage! And yes, you should absolutely apply, OHSU highly values non-trad students and "Applicants with a demonstrated ability to overcome adversity and/or applicants who have personally experienced inequities within the healthcare system." So be sure to fill out the inequities section!

“Superior” I’m guessing would be special ops, D1/olympic athlete, PHD or extreme research production.

I think if money is tight, or you are concerned about the time this secondary will take, its reasonable to send an email asking for clarification.

IDK how much these schools are valuing D1 athlete anymore bc this 519/D1 football player is not getting much love lol

I agree. Really refreshing prompts rather than regurgitating the same information over and over again tailored to the schools, felt like I was losing my mind. I've only written one answer so far lol but I had the most fun answering it out of all my secondaries so far.

How are people listing hours under the activities section? I have quite a few where the hours per week/month varies considerably, and these are long term engagements. ARe people putting ranges or just choosing a number and hoping they don't overanalyze it?

I am also unsure about this - I am hoping just to use that box at the bottom to explain a bit more? I am also confused on what activities I should put in there?

I ended up putting either a number or range and then making a statement about it in the box as well. I would just put any professional / personal activities that feel pertinent to your application. I just pulled anything that was submitted as part of my primary and had overlap with the past 5 years.

They just started sending secondary invites last Tuesday 8/18. I was verified early June and I didn't receive my secondary from OHSU until Wednesday 8/19.

Since they don't technically have rolling admissions, I wouldn't worry. They may just be sending them out in batches. If you are concerned, they seem receptive to email, however.

I am also IS and I found mine in my spam - it was sent on 8/19 for reference.

After seeing this I scrolled all the way back in my spam until 8/19 and found it. Thank you for your help

For the question about "additional ties to the state of Oregon that you wish to share" question, are Oregon residents supposed to answer that? Or just leave it blank?

From OHSU's MSAR: "Non-resident applicants with superior achievements. Superior achievements are defined as significant experiences in healthcare, leadership, extracurricular activities, and/or community service activities."

I'm IS and chose not to answer it. My entire application is Oregon already. I think if a reason comes to you naturally then do it but otherwise the rule I've gone with on my secondaries is that a half-assed optional is worse than a blank.
