And is the update just about this publication?

Well I also wanted to include a poster presentation and institutional scholarship I was recently awarded. But the publication is the big thing.

Duke is one of the schools that say they only want first-author publications. I also wouldn't say the other two are substantive enough either. You can call to ask them if they can make an exception but otherwise you don't want to get rejected because they are irritated you are sending things they don't ask for

Where does Duke say "they only want first-author publications"? Is this on their website?

I called Duke admissions and they picked up finally after like 15 calls spread over a week because I had a second and third author paper--they said they didn't want it. Cornell is the same. It's also more or less common knowledge that a significant publication update is only really considered significant if you're first author sadly :(

Guys if I had a publication accepted and I wanted to send in an update letter, can I add additional information to that letter (presenting a poster at a national conference, scholarship award, and show continued interest)? Or should those all be separate letters? I am unsure how they want their pre-II updates sent in and I am having trouble finding stuff online.

submit this all in one letter and just select one in the portal. these are great updates and it doesn't matter what author you are in my opinion. if they only care about first authorship, then 80-90% of applicants would have no publications.

Just to echo this, I basically submitted one letter including one publication in press and some national research awards, which I think is fine cuz i had portal issue that time and admin people were very kind and helped me submit it.

when i sent an update i put it under their publication category but also included other updates in addition to my publication that i was 3rd on. Then again, I haven't received anything from this school yet so idk if that is the right way to go!

I'm in a similar situation. Our lab's paper just got provisionally accepted for publication. I also have a new poster (as part of a new senior thesis) that I am presenting this week. I already interviewed, and during the interview, they said to get updates in ASAP because once we are sent to the admissions committee post-interview, they won't look at any update letters we send there on out. Should I send in an update letter or hope and pray based on where my application stands... I don't think I have time to wait for the full publication / other developments

honestly just send it in, I think they want accepted vs. submitted bc of the peer review part, since yours was peer-reviewed and provisionally accepted, I think it is fine
