Anyone have any input on life in Saint Louis, how people like living there, the actual stress level of the school, the culture (heard there are a lot of gunners). would love to hear from you, thanks!

I can only speak on the city because I’m in IS, but St. Louis is pretty chill. It offers a lot less than other major metros, public transport is awful, etc. but the county is massive and there’s a lot to do. Good music venues haha

I honestly really dislike this city. It's not very lively and you really need to rely on your cohort to do anything around here. The hospital system is really impressive but it's fairly unsafe if you plan on walking or using public transit anywhere. It has all the bad features of a city but none of the good stuff (good cultural diversity of food, events catered to younger folks, etc.). Everyone says there's a lot of different ethnic cuisines and there is some but it's just not good or authentic (mostly just fusions). The biggest scene here is running so if that's what you're thing you might have a better time. That being said, the school does invest a good bit into their students but I would expect that from most med schools. If you come from a rural region St. Louis can be fun but if you come from diverse suburban or metro regions it can feel pretty drab so it's all relative.

I was born and raised in Saint Louis. The people saying there’s nothing to do there haven’t scratched the surface of what the city has to offer. Free museums, a free zoo, free theater at the Muny every summer, lots of urban parks, nightlife in Soulard and the Grove, lots of great barbecue, Italian food, Asian food along Olive Boulevard. The public transit is admittedly ass, so you’ll need a car, but driving in the area is easy since there’s so little traffic. I live in a different city now that’s much more hyped/popular, and I enjoy it, but I have to fight traffic for 40 minutes and pay $25 to access an art museum now when back home I could drive 15 minutes and walk in for free. It’s a good place to be a student.

I feel like this is what gets me. I have not seen people have such a polarizing opinion about any other med school location. Some people are geniunely always saying its chill and nice, and other people truly LOATHE st louis, and that really really confuses me.

I'm wondering, what was your comparison point for this? I, for ex, live in socal, where you also need a car to get ANYWHERE. I feel like thats a fair critique in any major american city not named Boston or Seattle.

This was really informative, thank you! i love the school (alr interviewed) but have occasional moments when i am just scared i will be depressed there, or won't have anything to do. I bet it also really depends on your cohort and their willingness to hang out and explore.

My reference point is living in suburbs located within a 30 min drive next to a huge city. It's not that having a car is bad but that St. Louis is consistently ranked top 5 in property crimes among many other issues but isn't nearly a big enough city to justify the crime rates. I went to a theater near the mall 15 mins from campus last week and saw an entire row of cars broken into with their windshields shattered. I also witnessed a woman have a knife pulled on her right in front of me at the Delmar Loop station. Having lived in Boston, Alabama, and my home city I've just never experienced this ig so just sharing my lived experiences having only been here for like 4 months :/

So I do think it's chill if you don't leave the little grove, brentwood bubble but just trying to share reality.
