Hi. I received this today from Maryland. I imagine this is very common. Is this a soft R, or might the signal be more ambiguous than that? Any experiences/reactions welcome. (I will also this in the community tab)

The Committee on Admissions at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has made an initial review of your application and will need more time to reach a final decision as to whether or not to invite you for an interview.  Please be assured that this situation is not an unusual one.  The limited number of interview slots, the very large number of applicants, and the competitive nature of the selection process this year have made many of our decisions very difficult. Your application has been placed on hold.

The Committee will periodically review your application and will notify you as soon as a final decision has been reached. At that time, you will either be invited to interview or notified that the Committee on Admissions cannot consider your application further.

Please keep in mind that this is a year-long process.  Interviews are conducted at the School of Medicine through the month of February. Therefore, you may not receive a definitive notification regarding your status for some time, and we appreciate your patience in this process.  You are welcome to submit any additional significant information, or updates, in support of your application as you see fit. Updates can be uploaded directly into the application portal on the Document Upload tab.  I assure you that any new information you submit will be included in your file.  Please keep all other inquiries to a minimum so that the Committee on Admissions can complete the task of selecting the next entering freshman class.

I thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Please remember, your application is still under active consideration.

Can people please comment on your interview experience at UMD. It is the only interview I've received and I am worried about messing up my one opportunity. What do you think constitutes a good fit for this program. Thank you so much in advance.

I personally had a very comfortable experience at the interview, and that seemed to be the shared sentiment amongst other students I talked to who interviewed here. In general, the culture at UMD seems to be a bit more relaxed and I think that reflects in the interviews - I had a faculty interview with a pediatric surgeon that ended with us just talking about Baltimore and a student interview with an M2 student that just became an easy conversation that I ended up taking on my phone on FaceTime because of technical issues on her end - there are pre-prepared questions they ask you but it's most likely not going to be a super high pressure or harsh interview so I wouldn't worry toooo much (although being prepared for the questions is important, of course, and I guess you don't really know what kind of interviewer you will get).

In terms of what a good fit is, I remember the associate dean of admissions talking about how they pride themselves on selecting "good people", meaning people they trust will truly be compassionate, kind, and supportive students and physicians. Even speaking with current students, they talk about how they enjoy having classmates that are all willing to collaborate and help one another and what a supportive environment they have. Another thing, of course, is having a tie to Maryland. As it is a state school (and I don't know if you're IS or OOS, I personally was IS) they want to know that you have a reason to come to this school and serve its communities. Whatever it may be that you like about Maryland or Baltimore, make sure to talk about that and what your vision for being there for 4 years would be!

I hope this helped a little bit! There is definitely some stuff that I left out or that I didn't explain all that well so feel free to ask any more questions.

I took close to the full hour for both but that's definitely not always the case - I would say you should expect to spend 45 minutes though.

MSAR says 10 spots go out to people on the waitlist but I imagine it's pretty different year to year.

It also says:

Waitlist procedures and information

Applicants are informed that they are ranked in the upper or lower half of the Waitlist. Acceptances are offered as seats become available.

Based on prior posts on SDN it seems like a lot of people have gotten the A on Mondays. I would love for them to contact us sooner but unfortunately I think Monday might be the earliest December interviewers may hear.

I think they might be releasing decisions every Thursday/Friday of each week. They released decisions last Friday for anyone who was accepted from the 11/17 I think. This past Thursday, I think they released decisions from the 11/24 batch. So, I'm assuming that Dec 1st group should hear back next week on Thursday/Friday.

can any current students or current applicants who know more more about the school speak to the academic culture given UMD isnt P/F? This is a major consideration for me so i'd like to hear your thoughts!

Current applicant here, but given what I've heard from different sources (current students during the interview day, current students during the campus tour day, and friends who are also current students) they say that overall the academic culture is great! I think this is for a few different reasons, one being that while it's not true P/F, they don't really think the grading system matters because 1. how can you compare a high pass/low pass at UMD vs just a pass at a different school and 2. it's not like a bell curve where only a percentage of the class can get a high pass, if everyone does well then everyone gets an honors/high pass (they also say that almost everyone does do very well on most tests!). Also, the schedule at UMD allows for people to really do what they want with their schedules (I think it's one or two in-person small groups and optional lectures with the rest being your own time to do research, study, etc.) and people don't find the need to study late into the night or deep into the weekends. Finally, I think it's been mentioned on this thread before but the school really prides itself on bringing in collaborative, helpful people. The second years prepare a drive with everything they learned/used to study and use it to help the first years, the first years of course help each other out, and etc.; overall the academic culture seems to be very collaborative and not cutthroat at all (disclaimer: this is only from what I've heard, and of course different people may have different experiences (also med school is gonna be hard regardless)).

Hi! I recently had an interview with UMD. I also only had MMI before their interview, but theUMD one was by far my facorite. I was super nervous because apparently they used to ask some pretty charged questions, but for me, it flowed very easily and it was just a normal conversation. 45 minutes felt short even. Good luck!
