Is it frowned upon to use the same essays I used last year? I know that the "what have you been doing" essay is new but do they expect us to change our essays from this last cycle too? I feel like I barely came up short of getting in so I don't see much to change.

I am in the same situation. Ended up single digits away on the WL. Obviously, I wrote new essays for the new prompts. For the repeat ones, I am keeping the same essays. I tweaked and/or updated them lightly. Not saying I am right. In fact, it feels risky. However, I am really proud of those essays, and they are very genuine, so I don't know if I could come up with totally new essays and feel the same about them.

I tweaked a little for better wording but basically same thing. for the update i just wrote what i have been up to for the last few months and what my plans are for the next year

Is anyone else struggling with the Why UGA essay? They don't have many programs/student groups/community engagement/research departments on their website.

I would say go off the AU/UGA website and try to pull information from there. Also I would look at the global health department and veterinary medicine website too for reasons.

Did anyone who went/goes to UGA for UG? If so can you comment on the student experience there? I've heard some interesting stories about what goes down in Athens.

5. Football powerhouse (yes this matters!)

The first class already had 514 MCAT median. And I thought it would be less competitive than MCG :(.

If you’re around a 508+ and, more importantly, a Georgia resident, I think you’ll be given careful consideration for sure.

Should I use the same essays almost verbatim for both UGA and MCG? Since they are separate schools, it should be fine, right?

They’ll never know but these are your state schools bro (I’m assuming if you’re applying to mcg), so don’t be lazy and try hard on these ones

lmao I didn't know UGA posted on their website until that user sent it otherwise I was still following the AAMC stuff but it makes more sense to follow the school's timeline because it's the most accurate data, no? lol

Yes, it does make most sense to follow the school directly. However my understanding of that AAMC link is that schools responded to a survey providing that info. Also, sending II’s on the 15th to start actually giving interviews in Oct (as specified on their website) isn’t unreasonable given the scheduling process. So I wouldn’t say the two pieces of info necessarily conflict. But I guess we’ll see Saturday!

Actually, after looking at the website more closely (exact language pasted below), I'd correct myself and say that II's going out soon (maybe tomorrow, who knows) will probably be for ED applicants, while I'd guess that RD II's won't go out until September.

Yes, I was RD and I interviewed. It was an MMI like what you'd expect so nothing crazy!

Interesting. My interview happened sept 10. Applied RD. Maybe they are making some adjustments since this is the first full cycle. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Very strange! They weren't even accepting apps for the first cycle until spring last year so don't think it's that, but no big deal! Totally just had the wrong impression based on that info section of the secondaries!

makes complete sense! i'd think the same thing. i received the II 8/28 (i think) and my options were 9/10 or 9/11. they said applicants would be discussed by committee in the 2 weeks following interview and decision released oct 15 (accept, deny, waitlist).

i think uga is quite transparent but may make adjustments since this is their first full length cycle. last year was condensed due to the timing of approval.

Congrats! how is the process? is it stressful? I saw it was MMI, but is it true mmi with diff ethical scenarios cause ik some schools dont include theoretical scenarios in their MMI

For my interview day it was more behavioral, but nothing unexpected. To me it felt similar to the stuff you might get asked on a secondary. And its closed file which is an advantage for those kinds of questions.

Myth 1: You have to be a Georgia resident to be considered.

Myth 2: Being a UGA graduate or student gives you an edge in the admissions process.

UGA is known for producing competitive medical school applicants, but the UGA name alone does not give applicants an edge. Only 37% of our inaugural class came from UGA for undergrad, and 20% attended schools outside of the state altogether. Enrolling in the college that best fits you and your learning is the best bet for preparing a competitive medical school application.

Myth 3: We are only focused on rural primary care.  

Georgia needs ALL doctors. While we recognize that there is a critical need for rural physicians and we happily welcome those who want to pursue that career, we also know that our state needs doctors across all specialty areas and in all of our communities from the coast to metro Atlanta to the North Georgia mountains and everywhere in between. Yes, 120 of Georgia’s 159 counties are classified as rural, but those are not the only communities we hope to serve. We lean on our land-grant mission, which entrusts us with serving the entire state and meeting the unmet health needs of Georgians everywhere. Want to come to UGA SOM to serve rural Georgia? Myth 4: We only consider MCAT and GPA in making admissions decisions.

We do have academic thresholds in place: a 502 minimum MCAT score and a 3.0 minimum BCPM GPA. That does NOT mean, however, that we only consider those metrics in making admissions decisions. In fact, we have those minimums so that we can spend more time looking at essays, experiences, and letters of recommendation to learn more about you as an applicant. Our academics are rigorous, so it is important that we have students who meet our academic minimums, but we are primarily focused on identifying applicants who align with our mission and values, and we cannot get that from MCAT and GPA.

Myth 5: We use AI to screen applications.  

We have not and do not use AI in any part of our screening process. Two unique screeners review each application by reading the entire application packet with their own human eyes. “But how did you screen thousands of applications in just a few weeks for your first class?” We had some long days! Commitment is one of our values, and our commitment to our applicants is that if you take the time to put together a long, thoughtful application packet, we are going to take the time to read what you have shared with us.

Myth 6: it’s too late to apply to the 2027 cycle.

It’s not too late! You can still submit your AMCAS application by October 15th to be considered in our next class! The secondary and any additional materials, such as recent MCAT scores and letters of recommendation, must be received by November 15th.
