Einstein vs Columbia (pls help)

Hi guys! I am looking for any truthful and hopefully unbiased advice from people.

Important preliminary information: Although I have not yet decided, I think I will probably pursue a competitive speciality such as ROAD. I don’t really care where I match, but I would prefer somewhere well-regarded and in either the east coast or west coast. I also want to be able to do research during my career.

Columbia:

Pros:

More prestige with name brand

In Manhattan

More potential for me to change directions if I, for some wild reason, suddenly want to pursue something like neurosurgery or plastics

Great home residencies, great NYC connections

Very nice educational building (new VP&S building)

Great match list (at least from what I’ve seen on the published one from 2024)

Nice student housing

Potential connections to Columbia’s other graduate schools (?)

Cons:

Although students seem happy, the environment is almost certainly more competitive/stressful than Einstein’s

No aid, so I would be paying full COA there (~$460,000)

Research is great, however some mentors and PIs can be difficult to work with because of high demand

Washington Heights is IN, but not central to, Manhattan and is slightly removed from midtown

Einstein:

Pros:

Tuition-free, which is obviously a major factor for anyone

Great recent match lists

Rising in competitiveness/caliber, especially since the announcement of free tuition

Very diverse clinical exposure being in the Bronx

Good research opportunities

Solid home residency programs for specific specialties

Very happy students and strong sense of community; low stress environment

Solid NYC connections

Very affordable and nice student housing all 4 years

Cons:

Located in the Bronx, rather than Manhattan; 30-minute transit trip to midtown

Not as prestigious of a name when compared to Columbia

Potential for future competitive classes and/or more stress due to free tuition

May have to work harder to match top residencies, especially if I decide to pursue something hyper-competitive

No additional undergraduate campus or significant graduate programs to collaborate with (?)

I think the largest difference for me is the location. I don’t know much about either Washington Heights or The Bronx, but I do know that I would prefer to be in Manhattan, if I had the choice.

In terms of COA, I am extremely fortunate to have familial support. My family, up to my grandparents, have set aside funds for my schooling. As such, if I attend Columbia, they would cover my COA and I would not have to take out loans. If I went to Einstein, the money that would have been paid towards Columbia tuition would be placed into savings/investments instead. I realize that this is a VERY fortunate situation to be in, which I want to communicate before people comment about that.

Appreciate any sort of input.
