Some background:

- Illinois state resident, went to undergrad in North Carolina

- Interested in surgical specialty: general, ob, urology, ortho, potentially

UIC:

Pros:

- in-state tuition (cost is important to me)

- potential to live in Chicago (much better city than Worcester)

- good match list to Chicago area (if I want to stay)

- more job opportunities for my partner

Cons:

- not as great of a match list to other urban cities (nyc, Boston, DC, etc.)

- huge class size and not as familial/community of a culture

- less prestigious? seems to be ranked a tier below mass

- not as strong of mentorship

UMass:

Pros:

- I love the community vibe and feeling. Really enjoyed my interview and everyone I met. Strong mentorship and culture

- More prestigious?

Cons:

- Worcester. I live in nyc and can’t imagine being in more of a suburban city

- Strong match list in primary care (a lot of people stay in UMass) slightly less so for surgical specialties

- expensive OOS

I really love the culture and community at UMass, but value the cost and city vibes of UIC.
