Tufts vs U Miami. Thoughts? Thank you!
Accepted at both schools, no scholarships at either. I’m still on some waitlists but I feel like this is what my choice comes down to unless I hear from Mayo or UCSD. I’m funding my MD tuition on loans. Fortunately my spouse makes good money so I hope to avoid cost of living loans. We have one car and would prefer to keep it that way. My goal is to match for residency in Texas because my spouse and I both have family who moved there recently and we want to end up closer to them.
Tufts Pros
-Boston location means spouse can most likely keep current software engineering job and work from office there
-Cost of living is lower
-roots and friends in the northeast
-I speak Chinese and like the Chinatown location and outreach programs there
-Boston hospital system rotations are supposedly good for networking
-Strong match list in the northeast
-great public transit options
Tufts Cons
-tuition $73k
-slightly lower rank (though both tier 2?)
-Tufts health system struggling with funding? I hear competing opinions on this.
-Weather
-Insufferable Boston sports fans
Miami Pros
-MD/MS program has super strong match list in ophthalmology and great research opportunities at bascom palmer, which I’m interested in (but not set on I want to do lots of rotations first).
-tuition $60k for 4-year MD/MS in Genomic Medicine
-Weather
Miami Cons
-I don’t speak Spanish
-High cost of living
-mid public transit options
-Not many tech jobs for spouse who would need new job probably for worse pay
