Geisel SOM vs State School
Hi guys! Lucky to have a few acceptances but beyond lost between the two (trying to avoid naming for anonymity).
Geisel:
Pros:
-scholarship (equivalent to state school)
-was so excited/taken aback by how great school was
-higher rank
-great match list
-students seem great and genuinely happy
-amount of mentorship and support is insane
-close knit class size, small size makes it easy for research and stuff
-deans and all those I met on revisit were so nice and so clearly care
-students were so nice
-outdoors! I love to ski/hike
Cons:
-worried about rural area not being close to city, anyone I know, especially being single lol
-middle of nowhere lowkey
-worried about third year away rotations, away from class and hard to form close connections with mentors?
-like 30-60 mins farther from home than state school
-small class size leads to some classes being labeled — there’s a “studious” grade known for never going out or having much fun which scares me
-rural hospital doesn’t bring same diversity/cases as city hospital
-older facilities
State school:
Pros:
-ranked pretty highly, below Geisel but not my like that much
-such nice people
-nice new facilities
-city (not my fav city tbh but under an hour from where i currently live/all my friends are)
-seems pretty chill
-seems like students really balance studying with lots of fun/relaxation/going out
-good match list as well
-double the class size so more chance to meet friends
Cons:
-less prestige
-not great city
-would feel like maybe I want challenging myself as much as possible?
-bigger class size so much less individual support/knowing everyone around me
-didn’t get “wow” factor as much as I did at Geisel
unsure how to proceed. Identical cost, advice I’ve gotten is “go where you’d be happier” but I could genuinely see myself happy at both
