I know how this sounds, but I really do need help choosing — Harvard, Yale, or UChicago Pritzker?
Hey everyone,
I want to start by saying I'm genuinely aware of how fortunate I am to even be writing this post, and I truly don't mean it as a flex. I know how brutal this process is and I don't take any of this for granted. I'm posting because I'm genuinely stuck and would love perspective from people who have been through it or know these schools well.
I got into Harvard, Yale, and UChicago Pritzker, and I have until April 30th to decide.
A little about me: I enjoy research and I'm open to pursuing it further, but I don't know yet if academic medicine is the path I want. I also have no idea what specialty I want. I'm drawn to something that offers real work-life balance and feels genuinely fulfilling, whatever that ends up looking like.
Finances (rough numbers, not counting living expenses since I'd have to pay those anywhere):
Chicago: effectively $0 in tuition across 4 years
Yale: roughly $15k/year out of pocket, about $60k total
Harvard: roughly $30k/year out of pocket, about $120k total
UChicago Pritzker
Pros:
The mission around community health and underserved medicine really resonates with me
Six student-run free clinics, small class size, and plenty of room to get involved in leadership rather than just being a face in a crowd
Chicago seems like a genuinely great city to spend 4 years in
Cons:
The weather is probably the worst of the three. Chicago winters are no joke
Yale School of Medicine
Pros:
The Yale System seems to give students real freedom to pursue research, global health, or community health without constant grade pressure
Every Yale student I have talked to seems genuinely happy, which says something
Cons:
New Haven doesn't have a ton going on outside the school bubble
Weather isn't great either
I've heard concerns that Yale's pass/fail system can make it harder to stand out when matching into competitive residencies. Not sure how valid that is, but I've heard it enough that it's on my mind
Harvard Medical School
Pros:
It's Harvard, and I think the name genuinely carries weight if I end up wanting a competitive specialty down the line
The research and global health opportunities are hard to match anywhere
The hospital network (MGH, Brigham, etc.) is incredible
I think I'd thrive in their flipped classroom model. I tend to do better when I'm not just sitting in lectures all day
Cons:
Boston winters
Boston is expensive
Class runs 8 to 12 every morning which feels intense
Most expensive option by a significant margin
If you went to one of these schools, trained with graduates from them, or just have a strong opinion, I'd genuinely love to hear it. What am I missing? What would you do?
Thanks in advance.
