Midwestern AZCOM vs. KCU
For context, I am an AZ resident, but I have been living in Maryland for the past 3 years. I do not know exactly what specialty I want to pursue. I want a school that keeps all of my options open. I know going to a DO school will make it harder to match into a competitive specialty, but I think if I work hard enough, I have a chance at anything. I love research, and I know both schools have research opportunities. I think KCU might be a little better, but not sure if anyone knows about this, please lmk.
AZCOM
Pros:
- 1 hour drive to my parents' house
- My sister currently goes there, so we could live together (I love my sister, and living with her would be amazing)
- Lots of friends and family close by
- Good match this year
Cons:
- Losing rotation sites to other schools (ASU/NAU)
- No home hospital
- Crazy expensive ($83k a year)
- Graded and ranked
- Intense exam schedule
KCU
Pros:
- They have a home hospital
- Home residency programs (some competitive specialty programs like derm, ortho, ent, and spots are reserved for DO students)
- Cheaper tuition ($57k a year)
- P/F
Cons:
- Far away from family and friends and basically everyone I know
- Living in Missouri seems scary
If there's anything important about either of these schools that I should know, please feel free to comment. Living close to home seems so nice, but I'm also a little scared of being at a graded school and how competitive it'll be. Also, I think pass rates for boards are pretty similar at both schools.
