worst. interview. ever.

I've been lucky enough to have a few interviews but holy shitballs. The doctor opened by asking me “Tell me about yourself and what brought you here” so I give a brief intro (what i've been doing for my gap years and where I am now) and gave my why medicine (incorrectly assumed that she wanted it cuz of her "what brought you here" question). It was probably like 80 seconds long, when I finished she laughed a little before asking me what I've already told her: where I am now, what I'm doing during my gap years, etc. Then she said "I was going to ask why medicine but I guess you already covered that already."

She asked why this school and I listed out some things the adcoms had said in their earlier video about its clinical environment and locations, I said the name of a hospital i was excited to do research at, and she said "what??" I repeated the name of the hospital and she said "that's not a thing." I Googled it and informed her it exists.

Throughout the interview she made no eye contact, did not smile besides laughing at me, and was looked like she was getting her wisdom teeth taken out. By then I was just mortified and I was just spewing straight bullshit. I tried to answer all the questions to the best of my ability but I was just absolutely shaken.

In the end, I asked "Are you from around here? How do you like living in the area?" "I'm not. It's nice." I asked her to tell me something that stands out to her about the school and she said "nothing, all med schools are pretty much the same." I thanked her and logged off.

I know some med school interviewers try to grill you a bit but it didn't feel like that to me. It felt like I wasn't even given a chance.

Anyway, just make sure you know what the interviewer is asking for when they say "tell me about yourself". Sigh. And if somebody is genuinely acting like they don't give a rat's ass about you, please try to be as confident as possible and just say everything how you would normally because I did not.
