Hot take: Admit rankings should be tiers, not numbers... thoughts?

With admit rankings coming out next month, would y’all consider shifting the ranking system to be more categorical rather than strictly numerical?

I think it might reflect reality a bit better. People often talk about T5, T10, T15, T20, etc., but in practice those groupings are usually broader than the number suggests. For example, what people call the “T5” is often closer to 7–8 schools, and the “T20” realistically includes closer to ~25 depending on how you look at it.

A tier-based or categorical system could also help applicants focus less on the exact number attached to a school and more on the general tier it falls into. With rankings coming out soon, I feel like this approach might reduce some of the stress people place on small numerical differences that probably don’t matter as much in the long run. Curious what others think.
