Help me choose- UMN vs Wayne State
Hey guys! I’ve been lucky to receive 2 acceptances this cycle and I didn’t think I would be so torn. I have been accepted to Wayne state and the University of Minnesota (twin cities) medical schools and I didn’t think I’d have such a hard time letting go of Wayne. I think part of why I feel so attached to Wayne is because it was my only acceptance for a long time, so I mentally and emotionally committed myself to it and fell in love with the school and their mission. Wayne felt like a perfect mission fit and seemed to align strongly with my values (compassion, community involvement, service, diverse and underserved communities) But now that I have UMN, I know the logical choice is to stay in state I just feel less excited about it. Someone pls tell me im being crazy for still considering Wayne based on vibes and given the price difference :( I’d love insight from any current students at these schools too!
UMN Pros
- in state tuition (COA 85k)
- close to family and support system
- don’t have to move
- true P/F
- summer after M1
UMN Cons
- feels less diverse
- I don’t feel as personally drawn here (vibes)
- seems like not many extracurriculars besides research? Only one student run free clinic that I can find and service is important to me
Wayne Pros
- feel very mission aligned, strong interest in diverse and underserved populations and community involvement
- very diverse area and diverse urban patient population
- get to explore a new place after being in MN my whole life
- lots of extracurriculars and opportunities for service and community involvement
Wayne Cons
- OOS tuition (COA 102k)
- have to move, never been to Detroit
- earlier start in July
- no summer after M1
