UVA vs. University of Oklahoma
Hi fellow future docs,
I'm fortunate to have been accepted to both of these schools but am torn largely because of financials. Normally UVA would be a no-brainer but OU gave me a half tuition waiver, which complicates things. I've heard people say financials trump all, but is this an exception?
UVA
-Pros: true pass/fail all four years, more prestigious, amazing match list, no shortage of opportunities for every specialty, much better location, likely a better alumni network, may have a more competitive culture bc of calibre of students there? Larger class size, strong research
-Cons: more expensive (97k COA/year)
Oklahoma School of Community Medicine
-Pros: 29k cheaper at 68k COA/year, strong focus on service to underserved and addressing social determinants which resonates with me
-Cons: it's in Tulsa Oklahoma which isn't as exciting to me as Charlottesville, farther away from home, not as many opportunities for niche specialties like onc or ophtho and would have to rotate to OKC which is two hours away for some clerkships, match list isn't as impressive, graded clerkships, facilities likely aren't as nice as UVAs smaller class size and fewer people to meet, weaker research
Interested to hear anyones thoughts ab this
