NYMC vs Stony Brook
Hi guys! Hope this application season is treating you alright. I am lucky to be deciding between NYMC and Stony Brook at the moment and was wondering if people had any input for the two schools (good and bad).
Some background: I'm IS in NY, not sure what specialty I want to pursue but unlikely that I will want a crazy competitive surgical residency. Honestly I think family medicine is really appealing, or another clinical specialty. I want to make relationships with my patients. I am hoping to be able to do residency in Boston in the future.
I am leaning heavily towards attending NYMC despite it being lower ranked for a number of personal reasons:
- closer to Boston where my longterm SO lives (could drive or take the train and study)
- my parents live 15 min from NYMC so I could live at home/ have strong family support (so cost difference isn't a huge factor here)
- closer to NYC
- more diverse patient population
- better access to outdoor activities (hiking, rock climbing) that make me feel sane (lots of friends/SO in boston so it would be easier to do weekend trips with them in places between us as opposed to long island)
If you have any valuable input on the two schools I greatly appreciate it. I'm thinking generally NYMC feels like a better personal fit and if I'm happy I'll perform better, but want to make sure I'm not making a silly decision withdrawing from Stony Brook.
