Random thought as a reapplicant...so obvious..
Do feel your pain, here are my thoughts as a reapplicant:
1)Schools need to be transparent on absolute floors on applications: I believe they all have them regarding
MCAT
Grades
Grades-Science
Volunteering hours
Leadership-what do they consider?
Clinical
Letters
Research
I know, I know, I know there is a "holistic" element but there is most definitely an objective screening also
2) Schools need to be far more descriptive of the type of admits they had in prior three years
Not just MCAT and, Grade distribution but include number of hours of all above, so you can see how schools weight certain things
3) Let's face it, just because you want to be a doctor, doesn't mean you have what it takes objectively (i.e. grades, mcat). There needs to be an absolute discussion on the relative importance of these. I damn sure want my surgeon to have a 520 MCAT vs a 490 MCAT if I had a choice and knew. As in most fields, Law, Sports, Jobs..the hard numbers do, and should matter. You can argue medicine is "different", I totally disagree, I want my doctor to smart and diligent, but do not care that he goes to food banks on the weekend.
4) An entire overhaul of the application system AAMC especially. Should be a short window, all apps must be in by 10/31, and schools get their class settled by 3/31. No advantage of getting in early. No secondaries, no mission statements, all have same curriculums and want to help community. No secondary questions, but add five standard questions that everyone answers. Get "advisors" out of the game.
5) When schools reject you, they must send out a one page checklist on your shortfalls..Remember you are paying them, this keeps them honest at least, and also it confirms they actually looked at your app
