Stanford vs Columbia VP&S
Hello everyone, I am incredibly fortunate to have been accepted to these two amazing schools, but I am struggling a lot in making the final decision. I wasn't able to attend either second look, so I missed out on the vibe checks as well.
Stanford:
Pros
- Dream school growing up
- Possibly more prestigious
- Stronger research opportunities - I like the idea of being on the cutting edge of tech and innovation
- Better weather
- Convenience of living on a campus
Cons
- Palo Alto seems like a less fun place to live than NYC
- Stronger support system in NYC
- Worse patient diversity
Columbia:
Pros
- Access to fun activities and events NYC
- Continuity with the life and friendships from undergrad (attended undergrad in NYC and have many friends in the area)
- Convenience of the subway system (won't need a car)
- Approximately 80k cheaper than Stanford due to financial aid (Stanford did not match)
- Possibly stronger clinical training and patient diversity
Cons
- Although I like NYC, I am not sure how much I like Washington Heights specifically
- I feel as if I'd struggle with the regret of turning down Stanford due to the name/prestige
- Physician mentor told me that it's not as well regarded in the specialty I am interested in
