UMich vs Einstein (HPWL)

Hello all,

I am incredibly lucky to be in this position and wanted to get some input about Einstein from current/admitted students in the small chances that I get off the HPWL and need to make a quick decision. For context, I am a non-trad who have spent the past 5 years in NYC and really love it here. I am pretty open to all specialties, but thinking I might enjoy Anesthesiology, Pulm/Crit, or Internal Med.

UMich - Main question is if I decide to go to UMich, could I match back to NYC for residency?

(+) Free tuition + modest COA aid

(+) 1 year pre-clinical => I'm excited to get to the clinical part ASAP

(+) research closely aligned with my interest (e.g., health policy, quality improvement, healthcare operations)

(+) Great MD/MBA option if I decide to pursue it

(+) Well-funded school that have small grants/supportive for summer, independent project, or family emergencies (esp important for FGLI student like me)

(+) Good student body and faculty vibes and great second look

(+/-) Completely virtual lectures, which is flexible but can be very isolating

(-) car is required for M2, and in general, Ann Arbor public transportation is no NYC

(-) Very high COL for a small city...

(-) cold / bad weather

(-) no friends or family, and I would be moving by myself

(-) less diversity

(-) small town / undergrad vibes, so my life would be all encompassing Michigan Med student life

Einstein - Main question is are there any cons to Einstein compared to UMich that I am not seeing because I haven't had a chance to visit/talk to current student?

(+) In NYC where I can continue my routines, hobbies (e.g., surfing), volunteers, and frequent my favorite parks/coffeeshop

(+) Lots of close friends and support- NYC is home

(+) Diverse communities/patients

(+) Decent student housing at lower cost + decent quality

(+) no cars needed

(+) More study abroad connections to Europe (I have some family there)

(+) Optional recorded lecture with in-person option

(-) About $10-$20k higher COA per year

(-) Does not have a well-defined program for research that i'm interested in the same way that UMich has

(-) 1.5 year pre-clinical

(-) Sounds like less of a community feel? but I did not visit/do second look and none of the current student I reached out to via Linkedin responded...

(-) admin feels way more disorganized and not as well-funded
