2 gaps years, immigrant and first generation graduate

I hope this does not come out as a brag, but rather it is a reflection on the hard work I have done since I came to this country less than a decade ago. I still remember when I was working at a waitress, refining my English, and wondering if I'd ever be able to attend any college, let alone medical school. I went to community college and later attended the state school closest to home, worked through college, and got by with the support of my family and sheer force of will. I had to navigate so many unfamiliar systems and knock on so many random doors to get opportunities. As my second gap year ends and I am waiting on financial aid to make a decision, I am reflecting on all the barriers I have had to overcome and how lucky I am to be in this privileged position, to be in this country (although I deeply despise its politics) and work for my dreams.

For all of you whose cycle has not been as successful as you'd hope for, you are enough, you are smart and capable, your journey is uniquely yours and you will succeed. Knock on all the doors, ask for help, chase people and follow up, advocate for yourself, get rest, and stay humble. Be kind to others in your journey and to yourself. Much love to all of you, future doctors
